IMAP - Internet Message Access Protocol An e-mail protocol similar to POP but with expanded user functions
Interlaced.gif - a type of graphic image being used on web pages since the image begins to display as the file is downloaded rather than waiting to display all at once.
Internet - A connection of many individual TCP/IP campus, state, regional and national networks, into one logical network all sharing one common addressing scheme.
Internet 2 or II - Next generation Internet being developed by universities; FIRN is participating in this.
Intranet - Internal network used to share resources; uses the same network technologies (TCP/IP) as the Internet and are often connected to the Internet; firewalls keep the Intranet closed to outsiders while allowing internal users to access the Internet.
IP (Internet  Protocol) - A protocol that describes how data packets are transferred across the Internet and interpreted as an incoming message; a network layer for TCP/IP protocol.
IP Address - Address of a computer on a TCP/IP network; written as four groups of up to 3 digits, each separated by a period as in 150-176.12-50
IPIX - A format for panoramic (36o degree) view of images; requires special viewer software downloadable from IPDC web site.
IRC (Internet Relay Chat) - Internet too] used for interactive conversations between two or more users

Java - A programming language designed to write programs that can be safely downloaded from the Internet and immediately run without fear of viruses; can include functions such as animation, calculations, and other interactive applications; requires java-enabled browser.
jpg (joint photographic experts group, pronounced j-peg) - A type of graphic image, usually pictures with backgrounds.

LAN ( Local Area Network) - A computer network limited to an immediate area, usually within the same building.
Listserv - Internet mafl4ist which enables one message to be sent to multiple subscribers.
