P
PING (Packet Internet Groper) - A TCP/IP utility that sends packets of information to a host computer which determines if the host site computer is "up" and connected to the Internet.
png - An alternative to GIF, preserving all color information in an image, supports multilevel transparency and uses a lossless compression to reduce file sec.  Png creates a more accurate color match with the original image.  As PNG image is downloaded, it gradually displays in your browser.  Older browsers may not support PNG format.
POP3 - Type of mail server FIRN uses for incoming Internet e-mail.
POPmail - Post Office Protocol (POP) e-mail system where mail is retrieved from a central server to a personal computer's hard drive; allows use of graphics, binary files and other multi-media attachments.
Portable Document Format (PDF) - A file format that converts graphic-heavy documents into a form that requires the Acrobat Reader (free software) to view/print the file; especially useful for mass distribution of large documents such as online brochures, forms, or software documentation to be viewed on multiple platforms; PDFs retain original layouts so users see them exactly as created, including placement of graphics and fonts.
PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol) – Client based software that allows dial-up access to the Internet through a phone line; usually included with operating systems or can be downloaded from the Internet.
Protocol - A formal description of message formats and the rules two computers follow to exchange messages.

Router - A hardware/software configuration that sends/receives packets of data from one network to another.
