S
Script - A sequence of commands that executes at the touch of a button; similar to a macro.
Search Engine - A program usually on a web page that allows users to locate specified information from multiple databases; allows web users to quickly sift through millions of documents on the Internet.
Search Operators - Terms that help define (narrow) a search, either by limiting or expanding its scope; commonly used on search engines; examples include and, or, not.
Secure Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (S/MIME) - New standard for e-mail by encrypting or adding digital signatures to MIME formatted messages; prevents reading of intercepted mail and forgeries.
Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) - Most popular security protocol for the Internet; provided by Netscape to encrypt data that passes over the Internet.
Serial Line -A telephone line.
Server - A computer or software package that provides a service to client software running on other computers
Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) - the protocol standard in a TCP/IP network that describes how e-mail moves between host and users; outgoing mail server.
Spamming – Sending junk mail over the Internet.
Spoofing - A web-browser term which means tricking a server into thinking your client (web browser) is not what it is, but is in fact some other client.
Streaming - Audio or video data transferred over a network that plays dynamically as the content is downloaded; primarily used on the Internet, especially by radio stations using special software such as Real Audio or Microsoft's NetShow.

Tagged Image File Format (TIFF) - Graphics image format that is not platform dependent; TIFF images created on Windows can be viewed on Macintosh and vice versa; commonly used for scanned images.
Terminal Server - A special purpose computer that connects multiple modems to a LAN or host computer.
TCP/IP  (Transmission Control Protocol/ Internet Protocol) - A compilation of network and transport level protocols that allow a PC to talk the same language as other PCs on the Internet; basically a system for transferring information across the network.
Telenet - A terminal emulation protocol that lets you perform remote logins to other computers on the Internet.
T1 - A type of data connection able to transmit a digital signal at 1.544 megabits per second (Mbps); can support video but not TV quality, full-motion video.
T3  - type of connection to the Internet transmitting a digital signal Of 44.746 Mbps;  supports full-screen, full-motion video.
